  5.     As the national teams' emblem, the springbok holds a place of
  6. respect in the record books. But as a symbol of apartheid, this
  7. graceful African gazelle became an endangered species on the
  8. world's playing fields because of boycotts by sports
  9. organizations. Now that South Africa is allowed to play again,
  10. the sporting springbok is threatened anew.

  12.     The African National Congress last week endorsed the South
  13. African National Olympic Committee's decision to replace the
  14. leaping springbok with a neutral flag featuring Olympic rings
  15. on a background of silver, blue, brown and green. But President
  16. F.W. de Klerk charged that the committee was "abusing sport and
  17. culture for political ends."

  19.     It will not be the end of the springbok, however. South
  20. African national rugby and cricket teams are unlikely ever to
  21. be called anything else. South African cricketers played last
  22. week in India on their first tour abroad in 27 years. They were
  23. mobbed by Indian fans shouting "Welcome, Springboks!"
